Symphony and Hawaiian Mission Houses

We had two fabulous field trips yesterday! Our first stop was at the NBC concert hall where we learned about the instruments in the symphony. It was great to see and hear the instruments that we learned about in school.

Here are some comments from the children about the symphony:

Sienna- The symphony was very fun. We saw the instruments we learned about.

Alohi- the symphony had lots of instruments on the stage like woodwind, strings, percussion, and brass. It was so loud in there. It had different sounds from the instruments.

Jack- The trip to the symphony was epic because we heard common songs from each instrument like "Sponge Bob Squarepants".

Quintin- I thought it was cool because we got to listen to different instruments and hear some songs.

Thaiden- The symphony is so fun that when I saw the instruments, I was clapping my hands.

Matthew- I felt happy at the symphony because I saw all the instruments that I learned about in class.

Alysha- The symphony was so cool and the violins were so awesome.

Jade- The trip to the symphony was fun! We got to see different kinds of instruments like the oboe, flute, trumpet, and other instruments.  We also got hear different kinds of music.

Sierra- The symphony was a great experience for me to learn about the instrument families and their instruments.

Marlee- I learned that my favorite instrument is a piccolo.

Kaleb- I liked watching and learning about new instruments.

Here's a pic of the symphony from our balcony seats.

The Hawaiian Mission Houses were so interesting! We got to walk through a missionary home, but they didn't let us take pictures. There were so many interesting things from long ago. We also learned about the clothing that they wore and Kammiee and Reilly got to dress up in missionary clothing. Check out the pics of them below! Next, we got to see a real printing press from long ago. Kayton and Christina got to help with the printing. See them in the pics below. Our last activity was playing with games and toys that the missionary and Hawaiian children played with.
Here are some comments from the students:

Kammiee- On January 29th we went to the Mission Houses. We saw the bedroom and 5 people slept in it. It was cool!

Reece- Yesterday at the Mission Houses, one thing I learned is that missionaries did not have electricity.

Maile- I enjoyed our field trip to Mission Houses. I enjoyed going to the kitchen where I learned about how missionaries filtered their water.

Reilly- On the 29th of January, we went to the Mission Houses and it was nice because there were very nice special plates.

Xander- What I learned at the Mission Houses is that Queen Kaahumanu had to sleep on the rope bed, but she refused to sleep like the Hawaiians.

Christina- I learned that it was difficult in the olden days like they had to pee in pots and clean it.

Makoa- On January 29th, I went to the Mission Houses. It was really cool, but tiring.

Malina- On January 29, 2013, we went to the Mission Houses. We learned about the missionaries and I liked it very much.

Jayvis- On January 29, we went to the Mission Houses. I had fun playing games. My favorite one was the one with the rock and the stick.

Shamren- On January 29, 2013, we went to Mission Houses. We learned how to play games and learned how the missionaries and the Hawaiians lived. We learned that Hawaiians did not know how to read and write so the missionaries taught them. Then we played games and it was fun and cool.
Mr. Mike gives us directions. He sure looks different without his missionary outfit!

Kammiee and Reilly are dressing up like missionary children.

Don't they look cute?!

Mr. Mike shows us the printing press that the missionaries used.

Christina is getting ready to help Mr. Mike do some printing.

Kayton is inking the printer.

Printing takes a lot of muscles!

Mr. Mike is showing us how to play the games.

Malina and Kammiee are catching the ball in the cup.

Playing with the hoop and ball is so much fun!

Spinning the hoop is challenging!

Reilly and Alysha are doing a great job with these games!

Go, Jack, go!

Kaleb is really concentrating!

Nice spinning, Reece!

We had a lot of fun today!

Japan in a Suitcase and Star Lab

We had two special events yesterday. Our first two speakers were from "Japan in a Suitcase". They brought a suitcase full of interesting Japanese items. They focused on teaching us about how things have changed over time. This was a nice compliment to our JCCH field trip last week. Here are some pics of what they showed us.

Children in Japan bow and greet their teachers to show respect.

Did you know that they have McDonald's in Japan?

Japanese money sure looks different from our money!

Japanese students have so many letters (characters) that they need to learn!

Their school day is longer than ours and they sometimes go to school on Saturday.

They use cute bento bako lunch boxes.

Yum! Their lunches look delicious!

They play fireworks for special occasions.

Elisa and Jayvis are wearing yukata (summer kimono).

They play Jan Ken Po in Japan.

We play that in Hawaii, too!

Here we are posing with the Japan in a Suitcase presenters.

The Star Lab was a fun experience. We crawled into the gigantic bubble and saw the night sky projected on the ceiling. Mr. Mike taught us a lot about what we could see in the night sky. It was so cool! Ask your child to tell you what he/she saw in the Star Lab.

The Star Lab was awesome!

Mission House Museum Speaker

Mr. Mike from the Mission House Museum came to give us a pre-field trip talk today. He talked about what we would be seeing and brought many artifacts to show us. He had some very interesting stories about what the items are used for. Have your child share the stories with you! We can't wait to visit the museum and see more next Tuesday!

Japanese Cultural Center

We were treated to a wonderful, very educational experience at the Japanese Cultural Center today! There were three parts to our field trip:
1. Guided tour of the Gallery- We learned about Japanese culture and history and saw many artifacts. Ask your child to share with you what they learned there.
2. Japanese toys and games- The children had a chance to play with toys that children played with long ago. They also got to make their own toy from recyclables.
3. Japanese dance- The children learned a traditional Japanese dance about the Maneki neko (good luck cat). Watch the video clips of our talented dancers!

We'd like to thank the following:
  •  Ms. Ayada and Mrs. Almeida for helping us today! We appreciate your help!
  •  Iwata Sensei for teaching us so much about the Japanese culture.
  • The JCCH for giving us passes to come back again with our families. Iwata Sensei said that the children will become your tour guides when you visit!
Enjoy the pics of the activities we did in the dojo. Sorry, but we were not allowed to take pics in the gallery, so that's a great reason for your family to go on a family field trip!

New Year's Resolutions

Happy New Year! We are all looking forward to a fun and exciting new year! Here are our thoughts on "What is one thing you can do at school to make this new year even better?"

Jack- I'll try to help other students with their work if they really need help.

Quintin- I can get more MEs for doing my work so I can be really smart.

Reilly- I will try to get a ME on the HSA testing.

Jade- I can get better grades in math so I don't fail in math. That would be bad.

Walker- One thing at school is to get ME no matter what it is. That's so I can become a smart kid.

Kaydence- The one thing to do at school to make this new year better is to read a lot of chapter books.

Shamren- I will do all my homework and pass my AR goal and Kid Biz goal and listen to my teacher.

Marlee- To make this new year better in school is to listen and not play around or talk.

Maile- I cna turn in papers early so that I can become a Star student and have good grades.

Kammiee- I can do my HSA testing for math and try to pass this year.

Xander- One thing at school that can make it even better is try to reach my AR and KidBiz goal.

Kayton- Doing math, reading, and computers.

Sienna- Get a higher grade on HSA and pass KidBiz and AR.

Thaiden- Finish my homework and finish my classwork.

Malina- I can work harder to meet my AR goal and my KidBiz goal.

Sierra- I can beat my HSA score to get an ME because my November score was MP+ so I was super close!

Jayvis- I can be more nicer and help out the teacher when she needs help.

Kaleb- I could pass every KidBiz article.

Christina- Be nice and helpful with school friends.

Matthew- One thing I can do is recycle more.

Alysha- One thing I want to do at school is listen and turn in my work on time or early.

Reece- I can read AR books at school to get better at reading.

Happy New Year!                                                                                         Check out our New Year 's balloons with our resolutions! They will be displayed on our classroom door!
